Rescue Squad Week
1969
The volunteer rescue squad movement began in Virginia in 1928 with the establishment of the Roanoke Life Saving and First Aid Crew. Bom of the experience and vision of Julian S. Wise, the program has grown into a humanitarian effort that is international inin scope.
Here in Virginia thousands of volunteers give their time and services, at considerable personal sacrifice, to aid in the work of our rescue squads. Their sole support is derived from contributions by fellow citizens.
In tribute to the men and women who man the units throughout the Commonwealth, it is appropriate that the week of May 18-24, 1969, be designated as Rescue Squad Week in Virginia. As Governor, I call upon all our citizens to take note of this occasion and to pledge their assistance to our volunteer rescue squads.
