“The building will combine native stone and ‘weathering steel’ for a monumental effect that will nevertheless harmonize with the park’s rural landscape,” according to William W. Moseley, architect partner-in-charge for Marcellus Wright & Partners of Richmond, Va. “The unusual shape of the structure suggests movement to memorialize the battle charge of the cadets and to create an exciting walking experience for visitors within.”
A circular central unit will have all-steel exterior casing. The steel will weather to a rich dark rust color.^Inside Fn a theater wltTBe shown the 12-minute motion picture, “New Market...A Field of Honor,” which already has won two international awards.
A flanking wing of stone and precast concrete will contain the large two-story Virginia Room. Here colorful two and three-dimensional exhibits will trace in chronological order the Civil War’s military events in the state. Exhibits are being designed by Quorum 5 of New York City.
Another wing will house the visitors’ reception area, and a memorial area dedicated to the cadets will connect the three sections.
The Battlefield site and a fund of nearly three million dollars for a museum and other improvements were bequeathed to VMI by an alumnus, George R. Collins, of Charleston, W. Va. His will stipulated their use for memorial and educational purposes.
Until the Hall of Valor is j completed, the ante-bellum! farmhouse, which survives on the Battlefield, will continue to serve as the visitor center, Geary said.
