A former Secretary of Agriculture once said, “A thin layer of earth, a few inches of rain and a blanket of air makes life possible. Take any one of the three away and life on this earth would become extinct.” The truth of this statement forces us to recognize that conservation is everybody’s business and concern.
Each time we ride along the highway and see grassy fields, green forests, clear running streams, or breathe the fresh country air, we should pay tribute to the individual landowner who loves the soil and has been willing to spend a part of his income to preserve it and beautify it. We should also be aware that the Agricultural Conservation Program (ACP) has played a major role since 1936 in partnership with the landowner in his efforts to conserve these vital soil and water resources for all posterity.
Legume and grass cover crops made those grassy fields that enrich the soil and to hold the rainfall. Sod waterways and many other ACP conservation practices prevent pollution and sedimentation of streams and rivers.
