Laurel Blooming

Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins reports that the showy blooms of the Mountain Laurel are beginning to appear along the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. The blooming of the evergreen Mountain Laurel heralds the coming of summer each year, as well as the beginning of the naturalists’ conducted programs on June 14.
The best displays of laurel are found on the higher elevations along the Skyline Drive a little later. Early blooming laurel has been reported near Jenkins Gap (Milepost 12) and south of Marys Rock Tunnel (Milepod 33). By this weekend the bloom should have spread along the Skyline Drive. As spring gives way to summer, the procession of changing roadside bloom marches onward; and, like spring, the procession of Park visitors marches onward.
Beginning June 14, naturalists will lead 80 hikes and walks per week and give 75 campfire programs throughout Shenandoah National Park. New this year will be the photographic walk (3'Vhour explorer hike from Big Meadows) and the short Lewis Mountain walk.
All campground, picnic, and overnight facilities will be open by June 14 (as are!) as concessioner - operated and service station facilities).
