An estimated 30,000 disabled widows throughout the country, age SO mid ewer, are now collecting social security benefits.
Mn. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security district manager in Winchester, said today that before the law changed in 1967, these widows could not have received payments until & they were at least 60 yean old.
In general, Mn. Crumpton said, a widow age 50 or older, whose husband was insured under social security, may receive these benefits if her (inability started before her husband’s death or within 7 yean afterward. If, however, she received benefits as a widow with children of the worker in her care, she may receive the disability benefits if she becomes disabled while receiving the other benefits or within 7 yean after those benefits ended.
The benefits are lower than the amount that would otherwise have been payable to them at age 60 or later, Mn. Crumpton said, to take account of the longer period aver which they will be receiving payments.
