Highly efficient machinery now carries apples from the bulk bins in which they are delivered to the storage from orchards to the final pack ready for the market. These large bins hold 20 bu. and require special lift machinery both in the orchards and at the storage. When a bin of apples is processed, it is submerged into a water bath, the apples float up to a series of brushes that scrub and buff them, then on a conveyor they travel for about 20 ft. while about six or more women remove culls, then they are graded automatically by weight rather [than by diameter as formerly. The larger, heavier apples trip through first and the smallest apples stay until last where they are weighed automatically for 3 lb, or 4Jb. bags.
Whereas once all apples were packed as soon as possible after they were picked, now large quantities of apples are stored in the bulk bins and run through the packing process throughout the season as they are needed for filling orders. This gives the market a fresher pack later in the season and it also spreads the heavy work over a longer season, giving extra weeks of employment for many workers.
