Present day handling of apples differs greatly from the past. Apples are submerged in water for washing, then conveyed through graders for sizing, sorting and culling, above. Fruit was formerly shipped in large quantities, as barrels and baskets. Today’s market calls for small packaging and much of the fruit is packed in plastic bags, as below.
