Traffic Warning
In a plea for ufe walking and driving during the Labor Day weekend, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, noted that the 29 Virginia deaths during the same holiday period last year set an all time high for such deaths. Hanna continued in saying that for statistical purposes the holiday period is always a three-day one since Labor Day falls on a Monday. “This holiday,” he said, “is traditionally | the last fling of summer but for too many people throughout Virginia and the Nation it will be | the absolute and Anal last fling." He predicted at least 1,000 deaths nationally but stated that it was impossible to accurately guess at a possible Virginia score since in a relatively small area several multiple death crashes can raise the score beyond expectations. Nationally, he said, they tend to average out. Virginia’s scores have steadily increased since 13 in 1964.
