Cases Increase
Last year 16,702 cases of venereal disease were reported in Virginia. During the same period, every county except one, and all independent cities in the State, reported cases of venereal disease. Citing relationships between reported cases of venereal disease, race and degree of urbanization, the current issue of the State Health Department’s Virginia Health Bulletin reports concentration of the disease in the eastern third of the State. The large urban areas surrounding Washington, D. C., Richmond and the Tidewater communities of Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth and Norfolk contain 35 percent of the State’s population, 40 percent of it’s nonwhite population, and reports 66 percent of Virginia’s venereal disease cases.
The U. S. Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reports more than 573,000 cases of gonorrhea reported in the United States during the fiscal year of 1970. But CDC officials say the reported cases are Only about a tenth of the actual number. They estimate 1.8 million cases of gonorrhea for fiscal 1970 and say the number could be well over 2 million this year.
