During the same period 20,186 cases of primary and secondary syphilis were reported to the U. S. Public Health Service. But the actual incidence of infesctious syphilis last year in the U. S. was estimated to be 70,000 to 80,000 cases.
In Virginia’s VD control program, priority is given in infectious syphilis. All reported cases and their contacts are confidentially interviewed and examined. Preventive treatment is given to those who may be incubating the disease. Forty-four percent of last year’s infectious cases were brought to treatment by this “searching out” method.
Virginia law requires all laboratories performing blood tests for syphilis to report reactive tests to the State Health Department. Out of a million bloods tested last year, 17,000 reactive tests were reported. Eighteen percent of the infectious syphilis cases and 83 percent in other stages of development were treated last year as a result of this activity.
