watermelons nave been cultivated in countries around the Mediterranean, and as far east as India, for several thousand years. They are an important source of water for human consumption in many semi-arid regions. The early colonists brought seeds of watermelon with them when they first came to America. This vegetable is now one of the most important crops in the United States. Although watermelons are considered as a vegetable crop, the edible product is actually a fruit. To be quite specific, it is a very large berry because the flesh is entirely soft like a grape, tomato or eggplant.

Ice box watermelons are the best type for the home garden. The mature fruits weigh from six to eight pounds, and mature in about 80 days. The vines are less vigorous than the standard types and are easier to control.

Some of the best ice box melons are Petite Sweet, Sugar Baby, and Mardela. These are not only fine for the home vegetable garden, they are also becoming popular for commercial production to supply watermelons of convenient size for the market. ,

If you plant watermelons be sure to select varieties which are resistant to anthracnose and fusarium wilt diseases. If these diseases are not controlled, you may lose your entire crop.

Seedless watermelons are a unique and interesting development. They were produced first in Japan, but several good varieties are now available in this country.
