Cobia or Black Bonito Cobia, sometimes referred to as black bonito in Virginia, are one of the most popular fish of the summer season in the briny waters of the Old Dominion. July and August are top months for the big fish.
A 102-pounder taken off the tip of Cape Charles a number of years ago still holds the world record for this wide-mouthed, stubborn fighter. The cobia is a slugger by nature, but the fish can, and often does, leap when hooked.
My own introduction to cobia fishing came near Windmill Point in the western waters of the Chesapeake Bay a number of years ago. The big fish, a 55-pound behemoth that earned me a citation in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament, took a live eel. I had my hands full for what seemed like hours. Max Ailor and I were fishing a chum slick from an anchored boat, and before the day was up we landed five of the sleek bodied fish that could pass for giant catfish if they had whiskers.
The fish can also be taken bj trolling artificial lures arounc buoys and in the civinity of big schools of stingrays. The fish seek the shade offered by the buoys and schools of stingrays as they rest near the surface.
