“The beetles feed on twigs of living trees close to the wood from which they emerged. If very few or no elm trees are nearby, they fly further to feed. But they don’t always -fly far enough.^ The chances of infesting the healthy trees are greatest within 100 feet of the wood source and diminish rapidly up to 500 feet. Seldom are there infections as far as 500 to 700 feet, and rarely over 700 feet,” Weidhaas noted.
The extension specialist explained thast in all cases, Dutch elm disease control are preventive programs. ‘It is essential that control measures be carried out precisely and thoroughly or they can become a waste of time and money. A four step program of sanitation, supplemental spraying, prevention of root-graft transmission and the use of Dutch elm disease resistant species must be done at the right time and in the right way,” insisted Stipes. “And that includes supervision by a trained and experienced arborist,” he added.
