reported experiments wherein raspberry yields were doubled when a heavy mulch of straw and manure was used. Berries from the mulched plants were larger and better developed. New growth and fruits were less affected by periods of dry weather.
“Mulching should be applied to raspberries at least every other year. Its best results come when mulch is applied in the spring after the canes have been pruned and before the new canes start their growth,” Dreiling advised. The expert fruit grower ememphasized the use of mulch in blueberry patches. “Blueberries require mulching to provide the uniform moisture so critically needed by the speciality crop. Sawdust mulches for blueberries are very effective. The material should be applied from six to eight inches deep over the entire planting. And it should be repleted each year,” he said.
“Mulching provides a plus for strawberry growers. Its use keeps the berries clean and makes picking on wet ground more convenient,” Dreiling disclosed. “Arid" mMe strawberry beds are not irrigated, it is essential to use a one-inch deep sawdust mulch over the entire bed throughout the life of the plants.
“The mulch should be applied to the new everbearing plantation ten days to two weeks after the plants have been set out,” Dreiling concluded.
