Over Drug Control
Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson joined today in sponsoring a House resolution supporting President Nixon’s efforts to promote international co-operation in the control of narcotics production and distribution. The resolution calls for elimination of the illegal traffic in opium through action by opiumproducing countries and states the intention of Congress to “take appropriate unilateral action” if co-operation is not obtained within a reasonable time. The measure notes that, “most of the countries involved in the production or illegal traffic of opium or its derivatives are dependent on American military or economic aid.” In a statement, the 7th District Congressman noted that, “there are an estimated 250,000 heroin addicts in the United States, with tens of thousands being added in the persons of American servicemen who have contracted the addiction in Viet Nam, and drastic measures must be taken to break up the huge international production and distribution complex based on illicit drugs.”
