The Mansion proved a top visitor attraction last year when it admitted visitors for the first time in many years, with more than 10,000 visitations recorded for the one-month period.
Completed in 1813, Virginia’s Executive Mansio has few rivals for beauty and an historic past. It has been the address of four U. S. Presidents (three of whom served also as Virginia governors) and has elegantly accommodated many of the world’s famous personages.
It is a two-story brick home with large rooms, high ceilings, four Georgian chimneys, lovely gardens and priceless antique furniture and furnishings. On a grassy knoll only steps from the Capitol Building, the Mansion was designed to be a place of distinction that would provide a dignified and appropriate setting for affairs of state yet remain unmistakeable a home for Virginia’s first families, comfortable and enjoyable.
Visiting hours during August are: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays. All groups of ten or more must make appointments through Mrs. Frances Councill, Governor’s Office, State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia 23219, telephone 770-2211.
