“Doctor bills for October, November, and December may in some cases be counted toward the $50 annual deductible for both 1971 and 1972 under the “carry-over” provision of the medical insurance part of Medicare,” according to Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security district manager in Winchester.
“The deductible is the first $50 of covered medical expenses accumulated in a calendar year,” she said.
“Before any payment can be made by Medicare,” she added, “your record must show that you have met your deductible. So, as soon as your bills come to $50 attach them to a Request for Medicare Payment form, and send them to the carrier that handles your Medicare claims. In this part of Virginia, your request is sent to: Travelers Insurance Company, Box 10166, Richmond, Va., 23230.”
“The ‘carry-over’ rule helps the beneficiary who might otherwise have to pay the $50 deductible twice in a short period of time - at the end of one year and at the beginning of the next year,” Mrs. Crumpton said.
