Gilliam has said polls he has commissioned say the race will be close, but he will not release the figures. One local Democrat said the polls showed Gilliam leading by “a few points.” Gilliam has also pointed to surprisingly large turnouts at rallies in the Valley— a traditional Republican stronghold—as favorable evidence.
