THE Supervisors were a little skittish, also, about some related, ‘‘hard time” news. Mrs. Elizabeth Buntin, welfare director, appeared to inform the board that ‘‘we have a small fuel allocation through the Office of the Aging. ’ ’ She said a sum of $240 was granted for a year’s time, to be used to buy fuel oil for people 60 or older, who ‘‘must be destitute and have no other resources.”
There have been no problems up until now, she added, because ‘‘a lot of country people fall back on their wood supplies” if a heating emergency arises.
In answer to a question from the Board, Mrs. Buntin said she didn’t want to put an advertisement in the newspapers that the fund was available, because it might prompt a flood of applications that would cause a lot of wasted time.
‘‘I don’t think it should be advertised,” agreed Herbert Foster.
ANOTHER question about publicity arose when Pete Luke announced that the Town of Washington was trying to find a suitable trash dump site in town, and that the county is trying to find a landfill site.
“I don’t want too much discussion about this,” said Luke, ‘‘or we won’t have a site ever. Somebody always objects to a landfill, even if its five miles away.” Clarence Baldwin said he might know of a man who will be willing to furnish a site, and collect the trash, too.
