finally, Vepco s chosen spokesman said Vepco stockholders have had but one dividend increase in four years. That’s a strange way to put it. He could just as well have said stockholders have had no decrease in dividends despite the sharply-declining economy. By maintaining these dividends, Vepco’s reach into consumers’pockets have been all the more persistent and urgent.
Vepco itself has tacitly admitted it needs a better public image by hiring for $20,000 a New York public relations firm to give it advice. A healthy initial step would be immediate withdrawal of its application for the 500,000 k.w. powerline that would desecrate our scenic lands, with the refreshingly candid admission that the electric usage picture has indeed changed. It could, further, cease its incessant calls for rate hikes and thus slow down, at least, the shafting of the consumer—and it could do so, I believe, by cutting back substantially on its construction program (including abandonment of the incredibly expensive and highly-dangerous nuclear power
