FRUIT GROWERS ATTENTION...The Rappahannock - Madison Area Fruit School was cancelled on February 5 due to the weather and has been rescheduled for March 11. Circle this date on your calendar now. The program will start at 10 a.m. This school will be held at Graves Mt. Lodge at Syria as previously scheduled and lunch will be sponsored by the courtesy of Chemagro, Staffer Chemical Co. and Miller Chemical Company.
HARDY GREENS FOR THE EARLY GARDEN—Many vegetables which are used for greens are hardy and may be planted to secure an early crop in the home garden. These hardy plants will tolerate considerable cold and can be planted about one month before the average date of the last frost which is usually around April 21 to May 12 in this section.
Spinach is the earliest and most delicious green for the home garden. America is one of the best varieties for spring planting. The crop will be large enough to harvest in about 48 days. Most varieties of spinach will bolt to seed in hot weather, but America is some what tolerant of heat, and will produce a good crop before hot summer temperatures occur.
Mustard is another green which will mature in about 45 days. Tender-green, Green Wave, or Souther Giant Curled are good varieties. Mustard leaves are a bit tough and hairy and are not considered as good as spinach by most gardeners.
Turnip greens will also be ready to harvest in about 45 days after planting. Seven Top is the best variety to plant for greens, because it produces only foliage, and not the swollen turnip root.
Kale is an ideal crop for greens. It takes about 55 days after planting before it is large enough to harvest. Vates Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch is the best variety. Kale should be harvested when the leaves are young.
