Collard is closely related to Kale, dui me leaves are nai ramei than curled. It takes about 75 days to mature. As with Kale, pick the leaves when they are young and tender. Several cuttings can be made to supply collard greens over a period of a month or two. Swiss Chard is one of the best greens for the garden, but is not quite as hardy as the other crops. Swiss Chard should be planted not earlier than a week or two before the average date of the last frost. It will mature in about 60 days after it is planted. A short row will supply delicious greens for several months.
When planting these crops cover the seeds to a depth of about four times their largest diameter. If your soil is of the clay type, it may crust over and prevent easy emergence of the young plants. This can be prevented by scattering a band of sawdust, peat moss or sand about 4 inches wide and one fourth inch thick, on top of the row after the seeds are covered with soil to the recommended depth.
