Editor:

It was disappointing to read Mr. Helmke’s article in the July 31 issue of the “Rappahannock News” since he chose to level an attack against my personal style rather than to concentrate on the event —citizens immediately subject to a nuclear reactor expressing their fears and asking questions to the men who were supposed to know the answers. Clearly, I am not as professional an opponent of nuclear technology as Mr. Reynolds is a proponent and have not yet become hardened to the dangers nor accustomed to the distortions forwarded by the nuclear establishment. At this point, I hope I can be forgiven for being “emotional” when advocates assert that nuclear generation of electricity is cheaper, that nuclear materials do not pose a large public menace, or that yet unsolved problems inherent to this technology—human and technical malfunctioning, nuclear waste disposal—are all technologically soluble.
