As for the danger of nuclear material, it is not a matter of debate. All radiation is harmful (even X-rays as doctors have begun to discover.) Thus to say, “we have standards” or that this or that leakage into the environment was not dangerous is misleading and irresponsible. Radiation effects are cumulative as well and thus the fact that no one was killed instantly does not mean that genetic damage was not done or that it will not occur at some later date. One case that is indicative of the dangers is what happened to Edward Gleason Jr. who was exposed briefly to plutonium while moving a leaking package from one truck to another. He developed a rare form of cancer and died. His wife sued and collected from the AEC. In addition to these “ordinary” dangers, Mr, Reynolds himself admitted that citizens need to be concerned about what happens to nuclear reactors after they have lived out their 30-40 year lives. This expert on nuclear safety claimed that the site of old nuclear reactors would forever be off limits to the public and a constant source of dangerous radiation.
