THE only controversy in the Town of Washington budget is hidden in the $300 item for repairing the stone wall near the library. The lady who lives next door to the library thought the town should also repair the stretch of wall that runs by her place. But the town said no, and the lady finally decided she would just have to do it herself.
Not that Washington, Virginia, doesn’t have some serious problems. It does not, for example, have a sewer system. The town is getting around to doing something about that, but slowly, while it thinks about two problems: one, where’s the money coming from? And two, if the town gets a firstrate, central sewer system, wouldn’t too many outsiders want to move in? Little Washington doesn’t want any refugees from New York City—or, for that matter, from Washington, D. C.— coming in and threatening the town with heavy traffic or fiscal idiocy. □
