Conservative in that a long heritage of rich farming in Central Virginia and the Northern Piedmont is the object of protective sentiments.
Radical in that an increasing number of otherwise staid and unrevolutionary Virginians are sitting, unblinking, through academic lectures dealing with such shocking notions as the primacy of public land use rights over the rights of private property, especially where such an overwhelming public good as food production is involved.
As recently as five years ago such public discussions were unthinkable. Now sunburned Virginia farmers and tweedy landowners alike address the problem with scarcely a twitch. Scarcely; not totally. Ringing assertions of “a man’s right to do what he wants with his property” are still heard, but the difference is that such sentiments are no longer necessarily an expression of majority sentiment.
