IN THE afternoon, the some 100 persons attending the conference, coming from five counties, broke up into discussion groups about various possibilities of land use approaches designed to protect and encourage farming.
Discussion leaders then reported to the conferences on the general tone of these sessions, and Colonel Luke attempted to sum 14) the entire conference.
“We didn’t expect any solutions,” he admitted, but getting everyone together to discuss the problems and some possible approaches did serve to stimulate everyone’s thinking. He called for continued efforts to galvanize local people to seek local solutions, thereby avoiding solutions decreed from Richmond or Washington, D.C. “If there ever is land use legislation at the national level,” said Luke, “It will be because we aren’t doing what we should be doing at the local level.”
