The camels didn’t seem to mind the heat last week when a grass fire burned over about 150 acres of the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center near Front Royal. Sparks from a welding torch ignited the blaze and a high wind fanned it furiously over the hillsides. Motorists lined Route 522 watching the spectacle, and several fire departments responded to assist. Using all methods and equipment available the blaze was brought under control in a little over an hour. photo Dayid Batchelder
