landfill will be operated.

Israel Weissbrodt, owner of a historic house near the site, Thermopylae, also objected. “I feel I have a certain responsibility to all Virginians” to enhance the property, he said, and the landfill ‘‘would reduce the market value of the property; people came here because it is a beautiful county.”

He went into detail about his investigations into landfill operations, maintaining that the site is not suitable.

To points raised by Weissbrodt, Gardner expressed concern about the county’s ability to properly police a landfill operation.

McNear thought this could be accomplished, especially with the help of state agencies. Manwaring expressed some doubt.

‘‘The Updikes have not really answered a variety of questions,” said Weissbrodt, who is a lawyer in the District of Columbia, but who was represented by Greene.

Crigler then called Mrs. Updike to testify, and she said she would submit answers, in writing, to any questions about the proposed operation. She also reminded the Board that she’d be forced to comply with all state regulations, anyway, and the state people could get tough at times.
