Virginia entered December with 932 reported traffic deaths for 1976, or 21 less than the 953 for the same period of 1975, Col. H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, reported.
Colonel Burgess observed that on five past occasions Virginia has seen three consecutive years of traffic death reduction but never four. Noting that there were 1,256 deaths in 1972, 1,220 in 1973, 1,050 in 1974 and 1,030 in 1975, he remarked that if the 1,030 mark of last year can be lowered Virginia will have a traffic safety “first.”
