MADE coffins, too. Back in those days the county had a poor farm on Route 231 where poor folks with no money could go to get help. After dinner, we’d go over for prayer service and singing, carry the choir along. Some of the folks belonged to our church.”
When someone at the poor farm died, they were buried at county expense. “Many a time I’d have to leave church before the services were over ‘cause somebody died. In those days, there was no embalming and in warm weather, the body had to be buried right away. A coffin usually cost ‘bout $20 but they kept going up every year. The last one I made was black walnut and it was $45. Nowadays, people aren’t satisfied with a plain coffin. It’s gotta be something fancy and expensive whether they have the money for it or not.”
