FIVE years ago, Charlie put iQ> the panelling and ceiling tiles in the new Hopewell Baptist Church building, an old Masonic Lodge that the church members purchased for $400 and moved from downtown Sperryville to its new location on a hill overlooking the town. Charlie was instrumental in convincing the congregation to take on the job, maintaining that the members themselves were capable of doing the work with a little outside help.
Charlie was the narrator of “Come Day, Go Day, God Send Sunday,” a film produced two years ago about the importance of the church in the lives of the black community in Rappahannock County.
“Folks today aren’t satisfied. Kids nowadays get more presents in a single Christmas than my children did in their whole lives and they still aren’t satisfied. Seems like they’ll never be. You’ve got to be satisfied before you can be happy.”
At 74, Charles Lewis is both.
