Charlie Lewis has been involved with the church for his entire life, giving a large portion of his time to church duties. He is clerk of the Hopewell Baptist Church, a position he’s held for 45 years. “My father was the first clerk of the church and when he passed, they appointed me and I’ve been on the job ever since.”
The duties of the clerk primarily involve record keeping, according to Charlie--“all church records, financial records, records of membership, deceased members, a record of when somebody joins the church. When somebody joins the church, I have them tell me their age at that time. When they get ready to get their social security, they come to me for this record and the social security always recognizes a church record.”
“The head social security man from Alexandria,” Charlie said, came to Sperryville to check on the reliability of the Charles Lewis Bureau of Vital Statistics. He left impressed with the completeness of the records and has never questioned a Hopewell Baptist Church verification of age since.
