The amendments to the Standards for Classification of Real Estate Devoted to Agricultural and Horticultural Use would require that the real estate have or normally have; an annual gross sales of one thousand dollars and over of agricultural or horticultural products. Further, when the real estate is used primarily for commercial production of livestock, livestock products, poultry or poultry products, the amendments would require a minimum of twelve animal unit months of commercial livestock or poultry per five acres of open land for the previous year.
In 1971, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law permitting totalities to adopt a program of special assessments for agricultural, horticultural, forest and open space lands.
