“Kit” Shaffer, Game Management Field Coordinator with the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries has compiled some preliminary data pertaining to the results of the spring gobbler season in the Old Dominion, which indicates that once again hunters have enjoyed a record harvest. Shaffer reports that, “to date* a total of2,863 bearded birds have been recorded, an increase of 72 turkeys over the 1976 harvest of 2,791.
“The season, which opened Saturday, April 16, 1977 and closed Saturday, May 14, 1977 offered spring sportsmen a large number of mornings with excellent weather, with the exception of the last week when high winds prevailed. Early morning temperatures were unseasonably high, with only a trace of rainfall recorded over the entire period. Giles County hunters again led the entire state in gobbler harvest with % birds; Bath Co. was second with 80 birds, followed by Nelson and Dinwiddie with 77 each, and Bedford Co. with 71. Rockingham County recorded a total of 69 of the big black game birds. All sections of Virginia contributed to the excellent results, indicating a good population of the bird in all regions.
