Companion services are part of the state and federal thrust towards keeping so many elderly from entering nursing facilities, Mrs. Buntin explained. She added that children can’t be forced to care for their parents.
The public doesn’t understand Companion Services, said Mrs. Johnson. “They visualize a person sitting, watching T.V. and playing checkers.” She emphasized that the program also involves light housekeeping and is a feasible alternative to custodial care. “In the long run, it’s cheaper than putting someone in a nursing home but the public never looks at it that way.”
