Although the county has been officially declared a disaster area after the worst drought in almost half a century, none of Rappahannock’s farmers have yet been certified as eligible for disaster relief programs, according to ASCS director Tom Eddins.
The only program authorized in Rappahannock is the emergency feed program under which farmers who qualify are reimbursed for 50 per cent of their feed costs, not to exceed two cents a pound or $40 a ton. Determination of eligibility is complicated, said Eddins.
To date, only pasture loss is considered, Eddins said. The dates for corn harvest and second cutting of hay have not passed so those two crops are not included in the program that terminates
