Ernie King from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare will be in Charlottesville on August 9 to meet with school administrators and Black Caucus representatives from the Seventh Congressional District.
Black Caucus vicechairman Sherman White said the meeting was requested by the caucus for the purpose of determining whether HEW guidelines on hiring and recruitment of teachers were being met. White said that Caucus members weren’t sure exactly what federal guidelines covered and so had consulted HEW officials. “They wrote them. They should know what they say...We want to know what the rules are and we want to make sure everybody is playing by the rules,” said White.
The Caucus has been critical in the past of the small percentage of black professionals employed in the Rappahannock school system. At previous School Board meetings, Caucus representatives have asked for increased efforts to hire , qualified black professionals in order to provide black students with a more qualified self-image. White added that the Caucus would :like to see the percentage of minority professionals in. a 'school system reflect thepercentage of minority
