successive generation places a greater demand on our forests for the land uses enumerated above. Past use of the land has been abusive and degrading. Without exception, all of the forested acreage in Rappahannock has been altered by clearing, cutting, uncontrolled burning, or invasion of alien species imported by man. In most cases these events have resulted in degradation of the land, and natural processes would take several human generations to restore the forest stands to their potential productivity.
I should point out here that "management” does not always mean disturbance or manipulation of the forest. My most frequent recommendation for woodlots in this area is "Leave it to grow.” What I mean by management is "Establish clear objectives for the stand, and take whatever steps are necessary to approach these goals.”
What I hope to do in subsequent articles is to discuss some specific objectives and some positive means of managing the private woodlands for each objective. The most popular
