He was one of 6,500 Navymen aboard a five-ship U. S. Navy task force that participated in six weeks of naval training exercises off the east coast of South America. The Navy ships and aircraft were joined by units of the Brazilian armed forces for the exercises, which included air, surface and subsurface attack training. He and his shipmates had the opportunity to visit the Brazilian cities of Recife, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro
