sales, (2) production of raw materials for forest product manufacture (veneer, lumber, posts, paper), and (3) employment of operators connected with the harvesting, transporting, and processing of wood. The economic influences are obvious, but we must also realize that the forest land also forms the basis for many other “land uses.” Aesthetics of mountain land, healthy wildlife populations, air quality, water quality, and many forms of recreation are all dependent on healthy forests.
I think that it’s safe to say that most of these land uses represent interests which are common to nearly all residents of the county. Fortunately, all of these—including aesthetics—are usually compatible. In other words, a parcel of land can be successfully managed for several goals simultaneously. This concept is known as "multiple-use” management.
