Sherertz, who succeeded Larry Crawford last December, explained that a primary function of the VEA is help teachers gain “effective involvement in educational decision making.
“But very often they (public school teachers) are denied that opportunity,” charged Sherertz. “It is in this area that I have encountered the greatest problem.
“I cannot tell you (members of the Rotary Club) the number of teachers ivho have told me of problems that exist within their schools and districts, hoping that I could find some solution without involving them.”
The area VEA director told the audience that generally teachers are afraid or reluctant to file grievances through normal administrative channels.
“You complain about anything in this school system and they’ll nail you.” Sherertz claimed that is the feeling of many teachers who are reluctant to express grievances.
