Recruiting Teachers
In recruiting new teachers, the School authorities ought to pay special attention to young people who grew up in Culpeper and want to come back to the town to live and work, Davies continued.
“This hasn’t been done in several instances that I know of,” he said. Instead, hometown teaching applicants have been placed on substitute lists and outsiders given full-time employment.
Both candidates assured the audience that they would have blacks on their staffs in administrative positions.
Beard noted that his bank was the first in Culpeper to hire blacks and currently employed more than any other bank in the 25th District. To increase employment opportunities for both blacks and whites, Beard stated that he would work to bring in industry for those counties in his district that want it. “It doesn’t take industry to have employment,” Davies said. “Industry is only one area that provides job.” Great potential for increased employment also lies in service and tourist related businesses, according to Davies.
