Impassioned rhetoric, charges and counter charges may be the keynote of the Virginia gubernatorial contest but as November 5 draws closer, the discourse between 25th District Delegate candidates George Beard and John J. “Butch” Davies remains polite.
Davies and Beard took part in a panel discussion Monday at the Culpeper County-wide Civic Council meeting at Antioch Baptist Church. Both men emphasized the positive points of their own candidacies rather than attacking his opponent’s position.
The candidates apparently disagreed—in part—on only a few issues but even the disagreement was gentlemanly.
At the onset of the program, moderator Shakespeare Bland noted that the candidates weren’t at the meeting to receive endorsement, but to state their views on campaign issues so that individuals could make up their own minds.
Beard, speaking first, said he was primarily concerned with energy, education and employment.
The energy situation is “going to get a whole lot ; worse before it gets any better,” he maintained. “ThA thing that bothers me is that Virginia waS the only one of our neighboring states that had a shortage last winter.”
