Virginia’s drought-stricken dairy and livestock farmers | may realize an estimated savings of from S10 to $30 per ton of hay depending on its origin.
State agriculture commissioner S. Mason Carbaugh noted his appreciation after the Southern Railway, i N&W and Chessie railroads reduced their hay tarrifts to drought-affected areas of Virginia by SO per cent of the current rate.
The railroads during the drought of 1963 took similar hay rail rate reduction action.
On a load of 20 tons, the reduced rate to Staunton from Buffalo will be $14.35, Pittsburgh $11.44 and Lansing, Mich. $16.01.
Governor Godwin is requesting similar reductions which if approved would make the rate from Perrysburg, Ohio, $14.77, Grand Island, Neb., $26.50 and Lamed, Kans., $27.
Reduced freight rates have been established on 13, 17 and 20-ton shipments. Since the 20-ton shipment is the most economical, Commissioner Carbaugh advised farmers and dealers to specify that 50-foot box cars be used if available.
Farmers who can’t handle a full carlot of hay at a time may have local dealers pool their orders.
