Aid To The Aged
A woman in the audience asked the candidates for their views on aid to the aged.
“They’re not being treated fairly, especially in Culpeper,” she maintained.
As an example, she said that applicants for $84,000 in federal funds intended to defray high fuel costs from last winter were being turned down as not qualified.
Concern for the elderly is “long overdue,” Davies responded.
He questioned the mandatory retirement of senior citizens who still have the ability to be productive.
As to the fuel bill assistance program, Davies said he understood that most of the funds were unused and ascribed this to inflexible government standards and red tape.
He added that the program worked well in some areas.
While the fuel cost assistance program is “news to me,” said Beard, he added that similar ineffectiveness applied to drought assistance programs for farmers in this area.
