(Continued from Page 1) maintain an “open door” policy toward their teachers, admitted Sherertz, but, he claimed, “to many teachers that is the invitation of the proverbial spider to the fly.”

While Sherertz argued that the primary complaint of the teachers he represents is their lack of involvement in policy making, he also said that another major complaint is low pay.

Fauquier County teachers last March received a six per cent raise in salary. Sherertz and the Fauquier Education Association had requested that they be given a 10 per cent raise.

“In most places in Virginia teachers now are making less, in terms of buying power, than they were when...I started teaching in 1963,” , said Sherertz.

He said that his own starting salary in 1963 was $4500 a year and that area teachers (whose starting salary with a bachelor’s degree is about $9000 a year)
