Responding to an inquiry as to their position on free text books for public school children, both agreed that this policy would place a severe financial burden on localities and so should be decided by local government.
Quotas Opposed
Rob Freis asked where the candidates stood on the issue of racial quotas for admission to Virginia institutions of higher education.
Beard answered that he would have to study the matter further and added that this was a state rather than a local question.
“The quality of education is important...not a quota system...I would oppose it,” said Davies.
In regard to the state bond issue that will appear on the ballot in November, Davies said he had concern on two parts.
He stated that he would vote against the section on park improvements because he felt that bathroom facilities and shower houses should not be funded through a bond but should come out of the regular budget.
On the $86.5 million education section, Davies said he had reservations “but my inclination is to vote for it.”
