Typically, a clear Paulownia log will bring about the same price as an equal board-foot volume of black walnut. Since many Princess-tree products, such as wooden shoes, are small, it is usually possible to sell a log which is six inches or smaller in diameter.
This tree is easily recognized by its fragrant lavender flowers (in early summer) and by its persistent clusters of round pod-like fruits. Its leaves are heartshaped and slightly hairy. Seedlings and stump sprouts grow incredibly fast, sometimes more than 15 feet in a single year.
The leaves of young trees, especially in partial shade, are enormous, hence the common names “Bigleaf” and “Elephant’s Ear.”
Like most fast-growing trees, the wood of the Princess tree is not very durable. Even in the living tree, the wood will not remain sound for very many years. Trees sold for timber should therefore be cut at a relatively young age.' Vigorous stump sprouts will alwayi replace the cut trees.
