“That was in the 1950’s,” said Davies. “There were no blacks in my class...Times have changed...attitudes, the whole social fabric has changed.”
Lane Defended
“We ought to be honest with each other,” he told the predominatly black audience. “Too many times politicians say what they think people want to hear.”
Davies then criticized the attitude displayed at last week’s Black Caucus meeting in “condemning” attorney general candidate Ed Lane for his past support of massive resistance to integration.
Citing the parable of the lost sheep, Davies maintained that a man shouldn’t be condemned for his past. “I intend to lay it on the line when I think there is a tone of intolerance in the community,” Davies said. He stated that the “hostile comments from young blacks” directed at Lane had made him feel "uncomfortable.”
